About the competition

Design 32 – the Design Diploma Competition is an annual report on the area of design taught at eight public art colleges.

The past fifteen editions of the competition have produced over 300 original visions to answer questions about the function of design and the role of the designer, the interrelationship between art and design, the place of design in art colleges, and the meaning and value of design.

VITA

The Object as Living Matter. A Concept of a Sustainable Future

VITA is a lamp that joins technology and nature, symbolising harmony and the life cycle. The integration of biology and design produced a sustainable lighting device. The project shows how to transform the human relationship with nature: from exploitative to co-creative. The lamp is built of microorganisms, a concrete base with an energy system, and a glass cover that provides a sterile observation environment. As the mycelium grows and the fungus decomposes, nutrients are released and generate power, which makes the lamp self-sustaining. VITA is a form of dialogue between researchers and designers, creating new opportunities and inspiring new solutions.

A child's dream come true

Footwear collection

The main idea behind the footwear collection is channelling childhood creativity that overcomes social norms, along with affirmation of individuality and courage of self-expression. The designs are characterised by advanced constructions and an unconventional approach to form. The soles are sculpted artworks, made of various materials, such as epoxy resin. Other unorthodox materials that the designer experiments with include jacquard and structured knit fabrics that are typical of clothing rather than footwear, hair, toy parts, and luxury grain leather. These unique combinations build a distinctive modern aesthetic that celebrates childlike imagination and creative freedom.

Underwater

Haptic Publishing Form

The designer’s goal was to encourage children to leave modern technologies aside for some time and try out traditional sources of knowledge – such as books. She made use of an unconventional pop-up book format to combine reading experience with engaging exploration of spatial elements. The publication emphasises the role oceans play in human life and shows how the vastness of the uncharted underwater world shapes our imagination. The project is primarily aimed at providing an alternative to electronic devices. Children can enjoy this captivating educational resource, interactive yet non-digital, which stimulates their creativity and helps them build a stronger bond with their parents or carers. First, the author created a vector graphics version of the book, then she printed it and cut it out with precision using a plotter, to finally put it all together manually.

Ergonomic armchair

The designer developed an ergonomic train seat for long-distance travel (at least three-hour trips). The chair is designed to provide travellers with the right level of comfort during the most common train journey activities, including sleep, work, and reading, and to ensure that every passenger has enough personal space. The project is based on experience and information collected as part of interviews and observations, a review of literature on ergonomics and railway standards, and cooperation with an experienced train seating designer: dr hab. Krzysztof Kwiatkowski. The project consists of virtual models, animations, a 1:5 model, and a simplified 1:1 model.

MULTI SCRIPT

Platform design for multiscreen design

MULTI SCRIPT is a platform that accumulates and promotes comprehensive knowledge about multiscript typography. It offers practical technical guidelines about typesetting that involves various scripts other than the Latin alphabet. Currently, there are no similar resources available online. At the same time, as a result of ongoing globalisation processes, the number of multicultural initiatives is constantly growing, as is the demand for typefaces that go beyond the dominant Latin system. The main goal of the project was to design clear information architecture to support graphic designers who are studying particular type design methods or the anatomy of specific scripts. So far, the designer has developed materials for three scripts: Hangul, Hebrew, and Devanagari.

Autentico

E-commerce platform to support the purchase of art objects from art students and graduates

The project is aimed at supporting young talents from art and design schools by providing them with an online space where they can sell their works and reach wider audiences. This is not just an e-commerce platform but also a community and educational space which makes art and design more accessible, engaging, and inspiring. Its name reflects the core values of the project: supporting authentic artistic sensitivity, promoting original works of art, and building trust-based relationships between artists and their audiences. The platform is minimalist, transparent, practical, and user-friendly. The products are intuitively grouped by function, which makes them easy to navigate. The designer employed a consistent system of icons, typefaces, and a soft grey colour palette, so the users can easily focus on the presented artworks.

Sensory jewellery for neurodivergent people

Sensory jewellery responds to the needs and adaptive mechanisms of neurodivergent people, both teenagers and adults, regardless of their gender. The goal of the project is to provide a safe and discreet tool that can support emotional regulation in persons with sensory processing disorders. The author was inspired by her personal relationships with neurodivergent individuals as well as her determination to find a solution to the difficulties and challenges they are faced with on a daily basis. Another objective is to protect neurodivergent persons from social stigma and to raise awareness about their needs in society. The materials used in the project include surgical stainless steel and transparent bioplastic, and the technologies applied by the designer are casting and injection moulding respectively.

Home care for the newborn and mother during the postpartum period

Mobile midwifery workstation project

To facilitate their work and help them build better relations with their patients. The designer was inspired by her mother’s work: she is a midwife who supports parents during home visits. The mobile workstation includes a bag and a portable infant scale. It is accompanied by a mobile app (Nasz Patronaż) which helps in scheduling appointments, monitoring the child’s health, and checking up on the parents’ wellbeing. The solution was developed in cooperation with manufacturers of medical bags and measuring instruments. The project was based on interviews with midwives and parents as well as consultations with psychologists.
